Kalkar Coffee Rum, 25% ABV

The Cornish Distilling Co., Bude

One of our best-sellers, Kalkar Coffee Rum is popular with everyone – not just rum drinkers! It has a very strong coffee flavour followed by a warmth from the rum with just enough sweetness to balance the bitterness of the coffee.

Our Insights

This is another one of our eye-catching additions to the rum shelf. We love telling customers the story of how this was Tom’s (head distiller) first product to market, knowing that while he was perfecting his full-strength rum, the coffee would cover up any slight imperfection. Since then, the recipes have been tweaked to perfection and this goes a storm in the stores.

From the Distiller

The Cornish Distilling Co. is delighted to bring you its first scratch distilled Cornish rum, blended with single origin cold brew. The single origin coffee provides notes of fresh espresso and chocolate, while the Cornish rum adds fruit with hints of spice and a good bite to finish.

Perfect serve

Most choose to drink this neat over ice; however, it can be mixed with tonic water, coconut water or used as an alternative to Kahlua in an espresso martini.

For a grown-up dessert why not try some poured over vanilla ice-cream for an affogato with a twist.

Bude, Cornwall

Husband and wife, Richard & Fionagh Harding had plans to expand their Artisan Food Village business by distilling on-site. They met Tom Read – a local with a PhD in biochemistry, barista skills and a keen interest in cocktails and spirits – and a collaboration was formed. They began experimenting with molasses to make their own rum from scratch, which although time consuming, affords them more control over the final flavour. It is also quite rare to find a completely British made rum, giving their product a unique selling point.

In September 2007 their first product – Kalkar Coffee Rum – was ready to release. Since then Head Distiller, Tom, has continued to ferment molasses from sugar cane on-site and experimented with ingredients to add Morvenna Spiced Rum and Morvenna White Rum to the collection.
